La Patera School Tiger Talk From the Principal's Desk…
Smarter Balanced Testing All students in grade 3-6 will be taking the Smarter Balanced test during the month of April. As you may be aware, test results will not be shared with schools and parents this school year. The purpose of this assessment is to "test" the implementation of the Smarter Balanced tests. The computer lab will be utilized to administer the tests online. Please talk to your child about his/her testing experience. You are also encouraged to familiarize yourself with this new type of testing. For more information, please visit Reading is fundamental to school success. If your child has not been reading at home on a daily basis, this is a perfect opportunity to start. I encourage all students to set a reading goal. Success in school depends on a student's ability to read and understand what they read. Please encourage your child to read at home at least 20 minutes a day. The school library is open every day during recess and lunch. The city library is also another option that families can utilize to check out books for their children. Disaster Preparedness Every month we conduct either a fire, earthquake or lockdown drill at La Patera. These drills are not only required but allow us to become better prepared for any emergency situation. On April 23rd, La Patera will be having a Disaster Drill. This type of drill gives us an opportunity to review and scrutinize all the areas and practices that are currently in place if a disaster were to occur. You are encouraged to join us and participate as a parent. We would like to seek your input to make our drills even more effective. The more feedback we can get, the better equipped and prepared we will be. Student Discipline and Safety

I would like to remind all students and families the importance of following our school and classroom rules.
Our schoolwide rules are: Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful. These three basic rules encompass our
expectations of student behavior. We encourage our families to have conversations about these three rules and
how they can be applied in school and in other settings. It is also very important to remember that weapons
and toy replicas of guns, knives, and objects that can be used as weapons are banned from La Patera. Please
be sure that your child understands the seriousness of bringing such objects to school.

Nurse's Notes… April 2014
Goleta Unified School District Nurses The itsy, bitsy……Scabie
Sarcoptes Scabiei var. hominis, aka "the human itch mite" is responsible for the other infestation that everyone dreads, scabies. Just like the head louse, scabies are found worldwide and will infest anyone. They are most often transmitted by prolonged, direct (skin to skin) human contact, but occasionally the transmission can occur via furniture, bedding or clothing. The mite does not survive for long away from its human host and washing clothing and bedding in hot water usually kills them. There is no need to spray, vacuum or place personal articles in plastic bags. The scabie mite has a four-stage lifecycle: egg, larva, nymph and adult. The microscopic egg hatches in 3-4 days and the larvae migrate to the skin surface. The larva stage lasts about 3-4 days, during which time the mite burrows into the skin and forms a nesting pouch, where the larvae molts into a nymph and the nymph into an adult. The female mite is less than a millimeter in size and the male even smaller. Symptoms of mite infestation include: severe itching (especially at night), rash that appears as pimple-like or blister-like bumps, crooked raised lines (tracks) just under the skin that may be grayish-white in color. The tracks and burrows are most often found on the hands between the fingers, in skin folds at the wrist, elbow, armpit and knees, on the breast around the nipple and in the genital area. The characteristic rash and itching will often not appear for 1-2 months with a first time infestation. Even without symptoms, the person is contagious and the mite can be transmitted to others. With subsequent infestations, the symptoms will appear sooner, often 1-4 days following exposure. This is due to an antigen/antibody allergic reaction. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can help relieve the itching but short courses of oral or topical corticosteroids may be necessary. Symptoms may linger for a few weeks following treatment. Diagnosis and treatment will usually require a trip to the doctor. There are no "over the counter" or "home remedies" that will kill the mites or eggs. Common topical prescription medications are Permethrin (Elimite) which is safe for everyone over the age of 2 months and Lindane 1% (Kwell, Thionex) which can be used by persons over the age of 2 years who weigh more than 110 lbs but should not be used on open sores or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Crotamiton 10% (Eurax) is not as effective and cannot be used by children. There are some additional medications that may be prescribed but do not yet have FDA approval for use on scabies. Great Job La Patera!
